A telephoto lens allows you to isolate the portion of the image that is most interesting to you. Lake Tahoe is about 12 miles across, so there would be no easy way for me to get closer to this view.
My telephoto lens allowed me to make this composition on the west shore while standing on the east shore. A wider view was interesting, but nowadays so many people see photos on the small screen of their cell phone that you really need to get in close and make it obvious what you are showing.
Social media is not about subtlety, it's about making things obvious.
